[2026 note: Because Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting are sister arts, I was inspired to branch away from figures and try my hand at floral painting. Posts originally published on Instagram from July to September 2023.]
so i’m realizing that i LOVE working on non-porous surfaces! some sketches in ink on Yupo paper

what’s the name of this flower?!? your answer will determine whether I need to workshop this new glass painting style a bit more or not 😅 (July 11th)

floral sketches in ink & charcoal 🌺 and the first time trying out my Chinese seal! honestly it ties the whole piece together i’m in love 😍 (July 14th)

snaps of my newspaper sketches. i’m practicing brush strokes for painting but too scared to waste the “good paper” it doesn’t get more Chinese than this. peonies are my favourite flower 💕 (July 18th)

lotus practice 🪷 荷花
is it weird that i kinda love drawing the lotus leaf more than the flower itself? (July 29th)

chinese-style botanicals looking profeshhh with the stamp & signature 🤩
this was cute but watercolor is NOT my medium. gonna experiment some more with this style and maybe combine it with my nude figures?? whatcha think 🤔 (Sept 14th)

i’m in that awkward phase that every artist goes through, where my old style doesn’t feel true anymore and yet a definitive new style has not yet evolved. an uncomfortable yet necessary part of the artistic process. i’m distilling it down to just doing the things that feel good and bring me joy, without knowing where it’ll go.
the thing that brings me joy in chinese floral painting is the satisfying feeling of painting leafy shapes with single brush strokes. so i did just that! results are kinda funky, definitely wouldn’t consider these my next masterpieces, but they say you gotta make bad art before you make good art!
