The Suminagashi Collection records harmonies between water, ink, and breath. Utilizing suminagashi (墨流し, “floating ink”), the traditional Japanese technique of marbling ink upon water, I create organic patterns that serve as dynamic backdrops for gestural brushwork. The suminagashi is printed first to establish a foundational rhythm, or beat, to which I then respond intuitively using my brush. Layering black ink as the primary melody and sweeping metallic gold as accents, the process becomes a somatic jam session with the page. The resulting paintings are intimate compositions that capture the energy of a musical performance.
