About the Artist

Photo of artist Bonnie Zhou

Bonnie Zhou is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work bridges traditional and contemporary mediums, with a primary focus on Chinese brush calligraphy.

Her practice explores the visual beauty of her native language through its fluidity, rhythm, and expression. Alongside calligraphy, Bonnie also creates neon glass art and designs typefaces drawing from these same principles of flow and movement.

Known for combining artistic mediums in inventive ways, she’s always looking to collaborate with other artists on a fusion of calligraphy with other craft forms, enriching both practices in a cross-disciplinary way.

My story

Born and raised in the suburbs of Toronto, I got a degree in computer science (like a “good Asian”) and spent my 20s working as a software engineer in big tech. After burning out from years of the corporate grind (mostly from forcing myself to work in a way that goes against my ADHD brain), I went on a leave of absence to save my mental health.

I took up drawing for the first time in decades, and quickly realized that spending my days making art was a freedom I couldn’t return from. At the end of my leave of absence, I quit my job for a multi-year journey of re-discovering my creative self.

Despite being raised in a traditional Chinese family, I was never given the opportunity to try brush calligraphy until this period, right after turning 30. I have never fallen so immediately in love with any art form, and this practice has come to be where I feel most at home.

I've also developed practices in figure painting, neon bending, and type design. Knowing me, this list will probably continue to evolve! I'll forever be a multi-passionate being, and I'm so happy you're here to share this chaotic, creative journey with me.
